Why Is My AC Not Cooling My Los Angeles Home?

Thermostat, airflow, refrigerant, capacitor, coils, compressor. Every common cause checked in one diagnostic visit.

A running AC that isn't cooling is one of seven diagnosable problems. Most are fixable same-week.

Your AC Is Running - Here's Why the House Is Still Hot

A running AC that isn't cooling is one of seven diagnosable problems. Most are fixable same-week.

The thermostat is set. The outdoor unit is humming. Air is moving through the vents. But the house keeps climbing toward 85°F and you can't figure out why.

This is one of the most common calls we get across Los Angeles every July and August. The system appears to be working. It just isn't cooling. That distinction matters - because it narrows down the actual cause fast. If the diagnosis points to a component fault, AC repair in Los Angeles follows the same visit.

Measured, not guessed

Pressures, airflow, calibration and amp draw are checked with instruments before anything is recommended.

Los Angeles Summers Make This Problem Harder to Ignore

In Greater LA, an underperforming AC stops being a minor inconvenience quickly.

Valley homes in Burbank and Glendale routinely hit 95°F to 100°F indoors when AC capacity drops during a heat event. In the Inland Empire - Riverside, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga - summer afternoons hold heat longer into the evening. The house never gets a chance to recover.

Here's something most homeowners don't realize about Los Angeles cooling: wildfire smoke and ash from Santa Ana wind events coat outdoor condenser coils faster than dust alone does in other climates. A dirty condenser coil - the outdoor coil that must release heat absorbed from inside your home - loses heat rejection efficiency quickly during fire season. Your system keeps running. It just can't dump heat fast enough to keep up.

That's one reason a tune-up in April matters more in LA than in most other cities.

Case notes

What Actually Happened on a Pasadena Warm-Air Call

A recent Pasadena diagnostic uncovered two separate causes - neither one was what the homeowner expected.

A homeowner in Pasadena called in late July. The AC had been running all day. The thermostat read 76°F. The house was 84°F. He assumed it was refrigerant. It wasn't.

First, static pressure and airflow at the supply registers were checked. Airflow was weak - not absent, just noticeably restricted. The filter had been in place for over a year. It was packed solid. That alone was causing a frozen evaporator coil - ice buildup on the indoor coil that blocks heat absorption and restricts airflow further, creating a cycle that makes cooling impossible.

The system was shut down for 90 minutes to let the coil thaw. Filter replaced. Then refrigerant pressure readings were pulled. Suction pressure was slightly low - within a range that suggested a minor leak, not a catastrophic one.

The verdict: a coil cleaning, new filter, and leak detection visit. No replacement needed. Total cost was a fraction of what a new system would run.

He asked why the thermostat showed 76°F if the house was clearly hotter. That's thermostat miscalibration - when the sensor reads a lower temperature than the actual room, the system satisfies its call for cooling early. The room never catches up.

Two problems, both fixable

Two problems. Both diagnosable. Both fixable. That's why every step gets checked before anything gets recommended.

We Explain Every Finding Before We Start Any Repair

Every warm-air diagnosis at Mister Cool California ends with a written summary of what was found and what each fix costs.

Explained before work starts

Here's how we handle that: we don't start work until you've heard a plain-language explanation of what we found and what it will cost to fix.

You make the call

That applies whether the cause is a failed run capacitor - the component that stores the electrical charge needed to start the compressor and outdoor fan - or a compressor failure, which is the point where repair-versus-replace becomes the real conversation.

You'll know exactly what's wrong. You'll know exactly what your options are. And you'll make the call.

Mister Cool California holds a C-20 license from the California Contractors State License Board, license #1143117. We're bonded through Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company for $25,000 (Bond #7901206616). That means when one of our technicians handles refrigerant on a diagnostic call, they're operating under a licensed contractor of record in California.

The diagnosis

How We Diagnose a Non-Cooling AC System

Our diagnostic process covers every common cause - in order - so nothing gets missed.

A structured diagnostic checklist means we don't skip steps based on assumptions. Here's what our technicians cover on every warm-air call:

1Thermostat calibration check

Confirming the sensor is reading actual room temperature accurately. Where the sensor is the problem, thermostat installation and replacement removes the reading error.

2Filter and airflow inspection

Checking for restricted airflow that causes frozen evaporator coils.

3Refrigerant pressure test

Measuring suction and discharge pressure to identify a low refrigerant charge, which drops when a leak reduces refrigerant below the manufacturer's specification.

4Capacitor function test

A failed run capacitor often explains why the outdoor unit shuts down under load while the indoor unit keeps running.

5Condenser coil inspection

Checking for dust, debris, or ash coating that blocks heat rejection.

6Evaporator coil condition

Looking for ice buildup, mold, or restriction at the indoor coil.

7Compressor amp draw test

Catching a compressor under electrical stress before full failure.

Every finding is documented. Every cost is quoted before work begins.

What Shapes the Outcome of Your Diagnosis

Six variables determine whether your warm-air problem is a quick fix or a system evaluation.

The outcome of a non-cooling diagnosis depends on several factors. Some are simple. Some point toward larger decisions.

System age matters most. An AC unit that's 14 or 15 years old with a failed compressor is a different conversation than a 6-year-old system with a low refrigerant charge from a small leak.

The cause itself drives cost more than anything. A capacitor replacement is a fast, affordable repair. A refrigerant recharge without leak detection is a temporary measure - the refrigerant will drop again unless the source of the loss is found and sealed.

Undersizing is a factor LA homeowners don't always expect. A system that was never large enough for the home's actual cooling load - often installed without a proper load calculation - will run constantly on hot days without reaching set temperature. No repair fixes that. The right solution is a properly sized replacement.

Duct condition affects how much of the cooling produced reaches the living space. Leaky or poorly insulated ducts in unconditioned attic spaces - common in older LA homes - bleed capacity before air reaches the room.

Coil condition affects efficiency. A heavily fouled evaporator or condenser coil can reduce cooling output by 20% to 30%. Cleaning often restores performance without any part replacement.

Refrigerant type affects what's possible. Systems still running on R-22 face higher recharge costs and limited long-term viability. That factors into repair-versus-replace decisions.

Sealing the ducts you already have

Where duct leakage is bleeding capacity, duct sealing, leak detection and testing brings the cooling you're paying for back into the rooms.
